OB run up the numbers against KPMG

MATCH REPORT BY CHRIS SILVESTER

It was another late start for the Old Boys last night, with a 9pm kick off time at Kings not to everyones liking. Coupled with a couple of absentees and Steve R still nursing a bruised ankle it looked as if the Old Boys may have their work cut out. Both issues proved to be completely irrelevant however, with the lads simply continuing what they’d started 2 weeks previously and sending a message to the rest of the division that this season the Old Boys are not for messing with. An early talking point prior to kick-off was Dom Whitaker’s new shiny red boots to match his new shiny red shirt, which everybody had a good laugh at.

The game kicked off in typically hesitant Old Boys fashion and it took 10 minutes or so for the lads to get into their stride. Ian was keen to go on a few sorties up front and one of them paid off with a superb strike with the outside of the right boot from distance which crashed in off the underside of the bar.  The Old Boys were playing some good stuff in the middle with Matt getting stuck in nicely while Jess went on a number of mazy runs troubling their defence. Ray, Dorothy, and Darren looked solid at the back with little getting through at this point despite one or two handy looking KPMG players.  Jess was next on the scoresheet, unleashing a bullet from that trusted left boot which tore past their keeper at the far post. Not long after the Gaffer decided to get in on the act with a typical neat finish from a wide angle.  As the 1st half drew to a close, the Old Boys started to get sloppy giving the ball away a bit too much and trying one too many clever moves. Wayne came to the rescue however, with a stunning one-handed diving save to his right to keep the clean sheet in tact going into the break.

Half-time provided some well needed respite just at a time when the OB’s were under a bit of pressure. Particularly so for Chris Silvester, who had to pop to the loo to drop off some misbehaving kids.

As the second half started the match reporter was still nowhere to be seen. This was a pity, because apparently new boy Brian had laid a quick free-kick off to Tim, who crashed home. A goal to behold by all accounts. Unfortunately the OB’s then got a taste of their own medicine by conceding on the edge of the box to see one of their midfielders drill home. At this point a less experienced OB team may have started to get concerned. Not this OB team though, who, helped by a couple of sessions playing against only 5 men, passed the ball around quickly and neatly, with new boy Brian really coming into his own. Even Ray was keen to try a couple from long range, one even troubling the back netting. The Gaffer decided it was his turn again and promptly slotted one into an empty net after rounding the keep to make it 5 before a nice through ball to split the 2 man defence put Tim in to make it 6.

It was all happening for the Old Boys now and to cap things off Chris Silvester popped up to take a neat pass and finish with a half-volley 5 seconds from time. Those half-time refreshments had paid off handsomely.

The 7-1 scoreline was ample reward for a commanding performance and it looks like the OB’s are getting more accomplished with every game. 2 games into the new season the stats look formidable. P2 W2 GS20 GA1.
